What is the role of the brain in consciousness?

Most people think that the brain creates our consciousness. But the case that consciousness is actually separate from the brain and creates all of material reality is becoming quite strong.

It seems as though we’re not far from turning a page on the belief that posits biological processes (the brain) and nothing more are what creates our ability to experience the world.

This question sits at the core of the work of today’s guest Mark Gober.

Mark is a newer author in the consciousness space, having published 5 books in the last 4 years including An End To Upside Down Thinking which compiles the most emergent science and countless anecdotes to make the case for consciousness creating reality.

In this conversation, we touch upon Mark’s journey which is very similar to my own. We both got to a deep passion in exploring consciousness from what sometimes feels like the most unlikely of places: being student athletes at Princeton University.

Unlike my journey which started off experiential, Mark’s passion for consciousness began as he started to notice the undeniable evidence that there was something bigger going on with how reality worked then the story we had been told. This led him down a path of connecting the dots between leading scientific research, common supernatural anecdotes, and testimonies from some of the world’s most prolific scientists to propose a more expansive story for our reality.

Since then Mark has continued to put forth insightful prospectives in subsequent books on everything from liberty and our political system, to UFO contact and the great reset.

We touch on many of these different areas and I must admit I felt at ease talking to Mark who speaks my same language of weird.

Some additional highlights in our conversation include:

  • His characterization of ego dissolution

  • Moving from being planner and controlling life to learning how to trust life’s spontaneity

  • Why this emergent science is not more popularized

  • How to make sense of people acting nefariously

  • Intuition and the importance of coupling it with discernment

The more I dive into Mark’s work, the more I believe he is one of the top emergent thinkers in helping us make sense of this experience we find ourselves in. He also strikes me as an honest and open-hearted person with benevolent intent.

I hope you enjoy this episode with Mark and highly encourage you to check out his work!

-Scott
